The Why Files
& the brands behind the videos.

The Why Files’ DeleteMe reads turn a serious privacy service into a recurring Hecklefish story. A fictional fish hides under new identities while the host steers the bit toward data brokers and personal information. The character supplies the setup, while the host has a clear reason to explain the product. Privacy becomes a story the pair can play out in the same voice as the rest of the show.

The Why Files uses comedy to make privacy ads memorable

The brands, creative choices and product connections worth paying attention to.

How does the gag lead into the service?

In “Prophecy of the Popes,” Hecklefish says he is in witness protection after a restaurant dispute, then reveals that his personal details remain exposed online. The transition from aliases and safe houses to data-broker listings makes the privacy premise legible through the character’s ongoing joke. The host then describes DeleteMe’s removal service and a personal experience with its dashboard. The character creates the problem; the host’s dashboard account gives the product explanation an everyday reference.

A later spot starts with a talking fishbowl that appears to know too much about Hecklefish. The character’s concern about data being shared leads into a second DeleteMe explanation. The recurring character gives the brand a recognizable comic structure: an absurd privacy breach, a pointed question, then a brief service explanation.

What keeps the integration clear?

A brief can start with a privacy mishap Hecklefish would get into, then let the host connect it to data brokers and the removal process. The character’s problem gives the explanation momentum. Leave room for the pair’s back-and-forth and a comic return to the mystery episode after the offer.

Prophecy of the Popes | Saint Malachy's Countdown

Hecklefish’s witness-protection gag turns into a DeleteMe explanation about personal information on data-broker and people-search sites. The host follows the gag with his own signup and dashboard experience. That switch from a fictional mishap to a personal account gives the read both a comic opening and a practical explanation.
